Marisa Hoicka and Johnny Forever

Decadence and grimace are layered thick in oil on Marisa Hoicka's canvases. The portraits and intimate scenario she paints are linked by the artist's attention to longing. Strange bodies melt into one another desperately, while queer faces stare stoicly through a bright and wildly textured glamour. Perhaps these are the same creatures that brush the screen in Johnny Forever's videos, giving way to abstracted clutter of the moonlit mundane. Hoicka and Forever wade through trash and decay, applying the thickest mascara on the rainiest of days. Poised to slap gloom in the face where they may find it, the artists Search for Mothers, Daddies, Warm Bodies, and Offline Validation in age of electronically mediated intimacy.

A special performance was held as part of the Scotiabank Nuit Blanche Festival.
